Coming Up

Our new three year project, the Celebratory Arts Network, has started!

CulturaMobila was founded in 2004 and specialises in collaborative arts programmes with small communities, including large-scale celebratory events combining elements of theatre, visual art, live music, giant puppetry and pyrotechnics.

The events are mounted in public spaces, often in mid-winter, when their purpose is, literally and metaphorically, to lighten the darkness: to focus at the darkest time of the year on the coming of Spring and the advent of new hope and energy. They can also take place in Spring itself, to welcome its' arrival.

This popular, socially-inclusive art form has its roots in folk-ritual and carnival, and aspires to unite participants and audiences across bounderies of language, generation, geography, gender and culture.

The Celebratory Arts Network will consist of five groups making large-scale outdoor events in their own communities. Beginning in October 2009, the groups will be offered workshops in:

*Script Writing for Street Theatre
*Acting in Public Spaces
*Costumes for Spectacular Performance
*Making and Using Theatrical Masks
*Designing, Building and Animating Giants Puppets
*Processional Lanterns
*Fire Sculptures
*Producing Your Own Large Scale Outdoor Event

The first period will culminate in a large scale outdoor show in January/February, 2010.

IN 2011 MEMBERS OF THE CELEBRATORY ARTS NETWORK WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE PART IN "SPEAK NO EVIL", A HUGE OUTDOOR SPECTACULAR PRODUCED BY CULTURAMOBILA AND MEETFACTORY LTD. FOR THE EUROPEAN CULTURAL CAPITAL CELEBRATIONS IN TURKU/ÅBO.

Groups are being established in Pernå/Pernaja; Fiskars/Fiskari; Kimito/Kemiö; Nagu/Nauvo and on Kökar.

About CulturaMobila

“What was good about the project was the whole project.
What was bad about the project was that it stopped”

Roope, 11 years, Fiskars school

CulturaMobila is a community arts unit based in Fiskars, Pohja/Pojo. Founded in 2004 by playwright/director/pedagogue Julian Garner and visual artist/scenographer Hanne Horte. CulturaMobila exists to:
• bring arts products to - and make them meaningful for - people who might not otherwise have access to them
• to provide people in small communities with qualitative arts activities both as audience and participants
• to break down barriers between different social, linguistic and demographic groups
• to build artistic networks within and between small communities
• to demystify distinctions between professional and non-professional artistic practice
• to validate creativity as a universal prerogative.

CulturaMobila is equipped for small and medium-scale touring.

We also undertake large-scale, site-specific commissions.

Participatory programmes designed in collaboration with clients/partner groups.

Services provided in Swedish, Finnish and English.

Our previous 4 year project was Local Stories, supported by Svenska Kulturfonden, POMO Väst, Konstsamfundet, Sofie von Julins fond, Nylandskonstkommission and others. The project included:
• creative partnerships with villages in Västnyland, Östnyland, Åboland and Åland
• regular residencies at village schools
• professional performances/exhibitions
• participatory workshops
• collaborative arts projects and events
